The moments after an accident are critical
A car accident is scary in any language — but when you don't fully understand the process, or you're afraid of your immigration status being questioned, it can turn into a disaster. Here's what to do, step by step, in plain Spanish.
At the scene
- Stay calm and stop. Never leave the scene — leaving can become a crime.
- Check for injuries and call 911 if anyone is hurt.
- Move to a safe spot if the car still runs.
- Exchange information — name, phone, insurance, plate number.
- Take photos of all vehicles, the road, and any damage.
- Don't admit fault — just state the facts.
- Call the police — a report protects you, even in minor accidents.
After the accident
- Report to your insurance the same day — we can help you file.
- See a doctor even if you feel fine — some injuries show up later.
- Don't sign anything from the other driver's insurance without talking to us first.
Your status is not the issue
Calling the police or filing an insurance claim does not put your immigration status at risk. Insurance is a civil matter. What puts families at risk is driving uninsured or leaving the scene.
